A Mission of Love

Written by: Mégan Alba and Gary Burd

As the orange sun broke over the top of our nation’s capital, it revealed a group of men and women already standing at the Vietnam Wall and granite walkway. But instead of standing and reading names, they were sweeping, cleaning, and polishing the memorial.

Mission:M25 and the Beverly Vietnam Veterans joined forces for this special project. “There was an immediate bonding of hearts as we labored together,” said M25 Director Gary Burd.

After they finished cleaning the Vietnam Wall, the team moved on to the Korean Memorial, a granite wall featuring the “Lost Patrol” making their way through a rice field. The team said it was an emotional experience as they realized the stone statues they cleaned and polished represented real men who gave their lives in combat.

After the memorials had been cleaned, the two teams went to breakfast. Mission:M25 blessed the Beverly Vietnam Veterans by paying for their breakfast. “We simply shared that the churches we represent wanted to express our appreciation to those who remain among us,” said Gary. “They have never been more appreciated than they were that morning.”

The team then went back to the memorial, where they continued to minister until 10:30 p.m., listening to the veterans share their stories and offering support and appreciation on behalf of the church.

“It was one of the most amazing 19-hour days of my life,” said Gary. “I only wish there was more time… These are men who have served, sacrificed and given their lives, either in part or for a career. They will never make the history books or movies but are just as much heroes as any of those who do.”

  • Great work everyone….Is there some way others could get the information about other opportunities to do this same effort. I for one would love to help in the actual cleaning and I know some other people who might as well. Please pass on any information you might have in this area. Thanks again for all you do and the Love of Christ that is shown by your quiet actions…BALNAM….
